Approximately since time began someone has complained about society declining, but we have nothing on such a spectacular level as Caligula's' Rome, (all uphill since then folks)
The Inquisition and burning of women as witches, (so lets not complain about divorce), and the ever present media who try to tell us that if three misguided people eat live goldfish its an "Ever rising Example of Cruelty to Animals Official Trend".

First, the disolution of the family unit. Even if it's not the "traditional" nuclear family, individuals don't have the support needed to build coping skills needed to survive in life, everybody needs that kind of support from a family unit of some sort, even if it's one created from a close circle of friends.
Second, the willingness to use violence to solve problems instead of using verbal mediation. Violence is for cowards. Folks would rather reach for a gun than talk things out.
Third, there is no hope for the future among young people. Kids these days are bombarded with images of explosions and war and with everything else going on in the world, it's easy to tell the youngsters don't think they have a tomorrow, much less able to make it a better tomorrow.

If you're referring to American society ...
1. Credit cards and peoples lust for material things carrying costs far beyond their financial means. This has had a direct adverse affect on the American family by creating a more demanding need for dual incomes within the family unit.
2. Breakdown of the family unit with respect to parental managements failure to balance the needs against the wants. It isn't the children who pursue the material things initially but rather the parents who set this example and thereby ultimately find themselves losing control due to lack of time for family because they've placed themselves in the position of requiring that dual income to stay solvent. Thus, a lack of communication leading to failure to instill the proper values in their children who then later became parents and continued the 'tradition'.
3. American cultures failure to admit it's mistakes in the above due to ego and arrogance.
While my views will surely be lambasted, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the obvious connections of these things to ALL those other 'examples' that will surley be given to your question. Social welfare, lack of moral conduct and mutual respect for others regardless of social status, basic comprehension of social right and wrong, etc, etc, can all be directly linked to these things. We can blame the current declines on a great many things currently taking place in todays American society but the bottom line is that this society is made up of family units that collectively make positive and negative contributions which result in either social success or decline . In my humble opinion if we want to reverse these declines then it has to start within the family units and their collective desire to exist cohesively together by standards and principles that truly place their greatest value on moral and social good.

Decline of society started with the breakdown of the traditional family.
~divorce, women working instead of being able to devote time to children at the crucial ages, absentee fathers~
The decline of real democracy.
The people have lost their voice. Those appointed usually have final say in matters that involve all of us. Yet they care less what any of us want.
Groups that back the rights of the criminal instead of the victim.
Political correctness.
Appeasing the fanatical minority groups ( not meaning race).
I'm not saying anything bad against hard working parents at all. I just believe that the lack of time parents have with their kids has, overtime, made our society suffer.
To wrap it up .
1. breakdown of family
2. failed democracy
3. judicial system

Quite simply, the decline of the family unit. In countries where family is still respected and beloved. you don't see as much of this issue as you do here in the US. The family unit has disintergrated, leaving the newest generation with very little consistent guidance in morals, in beliefs, in anything! They have to fend for themselves in this society, with a minimal support system. Thus, they fall prey to what con-artists can impress upon them, be it through the media, or politics, or religion.

Lack of discipline in schools and in the home, political correctness gone potty where one cannot chastise children correctly. families dont sit round the table now to eat and discuss the day, they sit on sofas eating their microwaved dinners, ridiculous! Kids dont know how to cook proper meals, despite all the cookery programmes on TV! Kids are not learning the skills from their parents, how to make bookcases, mend cars etc by the fathers, or cooking, sewing by the mothers. I know that may sound sexist, but its not meant that way, my generation learned many skills in exactly that way! I used to sit for hours with my father in his shed learning how to make circuits for radios, i learned how to shoot and air rifle, and how to maintain it correctly, and I learned how to cook, sew and keep house from my mother.So did my brother, he could sew and knit, as well as do all the 'manly' things
Educational standards have dropped in the last 20 years, too much reliance on computers, not enough practical subjects, such as cookery, sewing, woodwork & metal work and not enough of the harder subjects such as the sciences, where is there is no room for subjective answers, its either right or wrong etc, too many subject iof the 'fluffy' kind, media studies for example, too mnay 'easy' subjects are on the curriculumn now, back to basics os what is needed with computers being something to study programming on, or for pure research only in schools, not for doing their essays on!
No National Service for the errant idiots, the grafitti kids and louts, could all do with a spell in the services, faced with snipers in Afghanistan, they'd soon learn respect for each other and authority, it would take all the stupidity out of them...

Lack of God consciousness, lack of knowledge that God, the Supreme Personality is:
1. The only enjoyer of everything;
2. The only proprietor of everything;
3. The best friend of all living beings.
One who knows the above mentioned things and lives in accordance with them, will make advancement, others will degrade. Society has to take to God consciousness, if it wants permanent peace and happiness.
