Check with your city, county, and state laws to find out what is required for that type business. In larger towns it is as easy as going to their websites, smaller towns may require going to the courthouse and searching for yourself. You can find out if they have a DBA and/or occupational license and/or health permit, etc. Different businesses have different requirements but it is all public information.

The county courthouse records will tell who actually registered the
business name. The agency responsible for issuing the license will tell you
if said person has a license and if it is current.
