yes.
I beleive that turning them on and off puts more wear and tear on the hard disk than just leaving them idle
disadvantages
the cooling fans constantly running will make more dust inside than not running. So it will need to be cleaned more often.
of course too, the electricity.....
and of course if you have high speed, its easier to break into a computer that always on ( same ip) than one that changes daily....

I hope it is connected to an UPS unit!

Hmmmm.... is it tied to the internet?...

If so, does she have a very good firewall?...

the biggest problem with it being on 24/7 is if a power outage occurs that will cycle the power on and off several times and can damage it.. I know several people who have lost computers from this type of failure...

I lost a modem to a lightning strike...

also, computer monitors will fail after a few years... but are easily replaced... hard drives will also fail... but are easily replaced...

by the time these fail.. it is time for a new computer anyway!!!

NO... The hard drive has a rotating disk and running it 24/7 will eventually wear it out.

I have one computer with a 10 year old hard drive that still works OK.. and not many people who run theirs 24/7 can say that.

It's actually better to leave it on 24/7 than to constantly turn it on and off. I would start my screensaver after 15 minutes though. Only reboot when necessary.

Yes, Most modern computers come with power saving features that lower their power consumption while they are on. Plus, most components are rated for a life that is much longer than your computer is likely to last.

If she's hooked up to the internet, it's okay as long as she has good security. If she's not hooked up then it's okay regardless. A power surge protector is a good idea.

Should be okay for the computer itself.....but the more it's connected to the internet the more likely it will be hacked into.
