I spend money on my pets out of love and companionship...
If I send money to a kid in Africa, I have no way of knowing if it was sent to the right place or the right kid or if that kid even benefited from my money...
Too many hands in the way of that child to make sure they actually get the funds...

I grew up on a farm so animals have always been a part of my life. I can only speak for myself but I know I am very grateful for our little Pomeranian that we have had for 8 years. I was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and had to have surgery and am currently going thro' chemo. Our little dog has been so affedtionate and has stayed right next to me thro' it all. That is very comforting! They are like family, I honestly can't remember a time when I haven't had one...(dog, cat, fish or bird). I don't feel "complete" without a pet. I have also known people who seem to "collect" pets. They seem to be people who don't have much contact with people! I also believe pets are an excellant way for children to learn about responsibility. Pets love you unconditionally. They are wonderful company when you are alone...And as far as feeding the children in Africa I know several families right here in our own town, I donate food to the food banks in our town and I help out the families that I know personally. I get more gratification from that.

First of all there are starving children in America. Secondly, pets (dogs & others) bring unconditional love that some humans are unable to do. I am not downplaying starvation in our country but pets need food & water also. Yes, I am an animal lover. Pets bring great joy to families and also many assist the handicapped. Without them, where would these people be? I could go on & on but I won't. Find your best friend in the world.....I bet it would be a dog or cat.

Because pets don't grow up. It's like having a baby forever.
Unlike the hungry kids in Africa, the pets are real - in the sense that you can hold and feel them and you can interact with them. With this interaction comes feelings of comfort and happiness. Plus pets won't answer back and will love you unconditionally.
There are much more reasons, but this is the basic in my opinion. :)~

I keep pets for our enjoyment and to teach my child responsibility, reliability, and how to be a caring person.
I think that if you want to spend your money on hungry children in Africa, then that is what you should do.
We all have our own minds and should be allowed to pursue our own ideas of happiness. If I give to a charity, I give to one that is going to #1 not have a great percent of my donation go to administrative costs, #2 go to help people in my own community, and finally #3 it must be something that I truly believe will help.

Pets add joy and fun to our lives and the lives of our family and friends. I work hard to support myself and can afford to take care of my home and pets and family, as well as give to charity. If you do not like pets, that is your choice. People waste a lot of money on recreational drugs and alcohol and cigarettes, should they send all that money to the hungry children in Africa, possibly. We do have free choice, and one life to live. If you do not want to "waste" your money, you can do what you want. I do not even want to think about the millions of dollars that I would considered wasted on some scientific research which I would consider to be ridiculous; such as the amount of sweat that flies produce. This will be an ongoing question throughout the ages. Have a good day!

Well, if you say we could give the money to a hungry child in Africa, what about not spending money on: Makeup, new clothes, new cars, expensive houses, ride bikes instead of cars, getting a new computer, buying nice things for your house, I could go on but you get the point. Pets are comforting and good for companionship. They really don't cost much money unless one takes them for surgury for some reason.

they keep you good company. you could adopt a pet from the SPCA for free, toys you could get from the $1 store, and if you get a big bag of food for about $35 it will last them about 3 mouths. Also, if you keep good care of them, you won't have to take it to the vet often. not all vets are expensive. That question is just like asking, why do you go to the movies for just about 3 hours, when pets can last you for years. PETS ARE GREAT!

We have 4 pets. I love to have my pets. I keep them for several reasons. They are great company, typically easy to tend to, and they are like family. Yes i spend money on them but they are mine to do that with. The money I spend on my pets doesn't interfere with what I spend on my own children. We also donate money to the hungry in the U.S. though. I also donate to the ASPCA. Not sure where you got your info. though to come up with the question but not all people with pets spend too much on them and not enough to help their community.

to learn to give and recieve unconditional love. To learn to care for another living being. To have companionship... I could go on, but I am sure you understand where I am coming from. Do you think that people who have experienced this love from a pet don't care about others? Many people give to the poor even when they themselves have very little - even the beggars on the streets feed their pets first before themselves. Pets teach about love and giving.
