All the above answers are important, but here's another thing to keep in mind -- goldfish will only spawn in the spring when outdoors. In addition to the feeding and light cycles, the temperature of the water is a crucial key to getting them to spawn.

Making sure they are a mix of maes and females, correct age, etc. is obviously necessary before this is an issue. If you are trying to spawn them outdoors, you'll have a hard time doing it out of season. Just part of their hard-wired instincts to get as many babies grown up before the next winter hits.

If you want to spawn them indoors, you will need a good amount of room (at least 55 gallons per female). Then, keep the temperature at about 50-60 degrees for a month or two, then gradually raise it back up to 70 degrees -- along with the feeding tips and lighting tips, you shouldn't have much trouble.

Hope it helps!

Depends on the size of the pond. If there is not enough room, they will not spawn. Ask a pet store that specializes in pond fish, they can tell you how much room they need.

Your goldfish need to be at least three years old before they can breed. Increase your feedings to about four times a day and increase your water changes to compensate. Use lights and slowly increase the amount of light/day as in spring.

A little Barry Manilow, soft lighting, a touch of wine, and for dinner -lightly sauteed meal worms with freeze dried flies for desert works every time.
