Honestly, you truly don't. You may have an idea about the direction for your future career, but once you start into that field things can change. I think they call it a midlife crisis. I went through it. I will be 40 when I graduate college. I am going for radiology technologist. I can go and cross train into other fields such as MRI, CT scan, mammography, ultrasound....
I guess what I want to say is don't settle for just one goal in life. Give yourself the opportunity to explore what will be vital to your life and still be a good career choice when you graduate college.
Times change so quickly. Career aspects have changed so much since the 70's. Take for instance, tool and die/manufacturing. Everything was manual labor. Now jobs are taken over by computers, hydraulics, and one person to operate it. There have been so many job cuts in the manufacturing industry in the recent years it's almost unreal.
Best wishes with your career goal(s) and making your dreams come true!

I always knew it would be in the health care field. I actually have 4 degrees. When I joined the military, I received 2 out of the 4 there. My mother asked me if I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up even though I had a job and was going to school.
I will always want to further my knowledge. I get tired of some of the politics and it is time to move on after a while. I like the health care field since I love to help others. I have been in it for 16 years.

Try listing all the things you enjoy doing. What type of skills and/or specialties ar eyou good at. It will become clearer if you read a lot and try a little bit of everything. Take a job or career plan test and see what that shows you... but someones those things are inaccurate.. The one thing I can say is that you can be absolutely anything you put your mind too.. the sky is the limit. I know that doesn't really help but you'll figure it out before you know it :)... best wishes.

Very tough question, I graduated from high school with no thought of going to college, so after two years of working at the railroad I joined the Navy, they gave me an education and after 30 years I entered college and hold two degrees and now I teach elementary school and I love it.

You don't. that's the hard part. You just have to start with what you think you want to be when you grow up. Take it from there. What you should think of though is that whatever you choose- go for what you like and then you'll get paid for doing what you like.

What are your priorities, do a soul search. If money governs you, go into business. There is no shame there. Otherwise, find something that interests or challenges you, and work for a career there.
Remember, that work is what you do...not who you are.

Write a list of pros and cons of a variety of prospective majors. Choose the one in which the pros most outweight the cons. IMPORTANT: DO NOT let you parents or peer pressure sway you. I can't emphasize that more!
