Stay at a 5 star hotel. Get a hotel transfer both ways from the airport.
Have the hotel number loaded in your mobile phone.

There are a number of higher end/western hotels near the delhi airport, if you are concerned with safety I would recommend one of the higher end hotels that cater to business travellers, check out this list which lists a number of them:

I have been through the Delhi airport and didn't have any issues with safety. The crowd when you clear customs can be pretty intense, but if you call ahead to the hotel and arrange for them to pick you up the driver will meet you right outside customs and you won't have to deal with the crowds alone. The hotel transportation will take care of pretty much all of your safety concerns.

Seems to me, the question is to spend a night. Two options ..
1. Either stay right there at airport so tht u cud avoid any hastes of the last hours.
2. Book a hotel n get its cab to pick ya up .... like there is Radisson at mahipalpur, very close to international airport or as u will b catching up a domestic flight, the taj at dhuala kuan is the nearest one..

Stay at Radisson Hotel, its only 10 minutes from Airport but do reserve in Advance. Go to Radisson.com and book yourself. May get a Better Rate

Book the hotel from the place you are starting and ask the hotel to give pick up service.
Or
Take a Pre paid Taxi from Inside the airport itself... thats safe too..

for woman saftey point of view stay at Raddison ...2KM from Airport. Avoid other cheap hotel in Mahipal pur area...tout will take you there. Also avoid Centaur....there are case where staff made fild by hidden camera.
