Of course you can. For example, I write novels and poems and I have thought of selling them.

Of course you can, and the time to try to see if you are cut for it is just a month or so away. There is a yearly competition called the National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. It is run every year during the month of November. The competition has no prices, you compete for bragging rights. The competition is 100% free and you can write your book either with your computer, typewriter or by longhand.

The goal? You have to write an original work of fiction that is at least 50,000 words long, which is the borderline between a novella and a real novel. I have done it three times, flunked it once but I did finish it in 2003 and 2005.

How is this possible? Because you are not alone. There are thousands of people that do this every year, and the message boards have regional forums, so you are bound to find a local NaNoWriMo support group that will gladly help cheer you up and push you along as you finish your book.

NaNoWriMo's official website is at http://nanowrimo.org

Most years Lulu.com will give you one free hard copy of your book if you prove them that you wrote it as part of NaNoWriMo.

My two novels are free to download:

If you really like to write, this is the most fun you will have all year. By the way, you don't even need to know how to write a novel, all you need is the desire to learn. Whatever you don't know you can figure out on your own or by asking in the NaNoWriMo forums.

Yes. The Snowy Day was written by Ezra Jack Keats when he was 12. It was a 1963 Caldecott winner. Beautiful pictures and a nice story about a little boys wanderings on a snowy day.

So, I say go for it if you have an idea for a book. And then tell people about it (teachers, librarians, friends) ask if they know where you can send it. Don't give up!

of course! im writing a novel currently, and im only 13. but it takes a while, because you really have to write when you get an idea, and then revise it over 6948693 times before you think its perfect. but if you want to be an Author, go right on ahead!
