...preferably one that would apply more to a friend than to a family member. Any ideas?

Good friends are rare and few,

Looking back on the day we met ,brings memmories to my mind. How every day i spend with you something new id find.

i dont know of any poems, but i like "at my most beautiful" by REM. a song is a poem with music and there's plenty more songs than poems that will suit your situation.

Though i really wish there's one but i think he'd appreciate it more if i wrote it myself.
and i think you should write your own as well, they'll appreciate it more knowing you took time and effort making it
