A kink is a bend in a straight line, the word straight is used to mean honest, normal or heterosexual.

So it follows that kinky means unusual, it is not an invented slang word

Maybe it was a couple of Senior Citizens referring to a bad bout of Arthritis:ex. "Me and my wife felt a kinda Kinky last night", and that was misinterpreted by a dirty old man, thinking something sexual.
