It has helped to create classes of dependent people and victims who think all of their problems are due to someone else's actions. Great strategy though - they are guaranteed votes
Great answer groomingdiva_pgh, and thank you for your historical facts in response to Anthony's post, but you forgot to mention the origin of Social Security - it was first thought up by Otto von Bismarck, a staunch conservative. His rationale was that he would appeal to the liberals by providing an entitlement - only thing, it backfired, they wanted more and figured they'd get more from the liberals.

Liberalism failed America because it's goal is equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity. Since real people are unequal, (some are smarter, some are stronger, etc) the only way to achieve equality of outcome is to tilt the playing field so that people are NOT treated equally. That is un-American, and people have finally woken up to it.
In addition, when faced with their failure, rather than admit their mistakes and move on, the extremist liberals seized control of the party and are now pushing it's platform to heights of sheer lunacy. The Democratic Party of today is NOT the party of FDR or JFK. Joe Lieberman is more liberal that either of those former Presidents, and look at the way he's being mistreated.
BTW, anthonyinkc needs to read a little history. The EPA was created by Richard Nixon. In addition, while the Voting Rights Act was an LBJ initiative, it was a large block of Southern Democrats who voted against it. It passed only because Republicans voted FOR it.

You do know that even your fellow southern republican females are voting more and more democrat right?
Even some of your republicans are finally seeing the light and oppose Bush and his policies...hehe shoo, the Supreme Court as well, that he carefully chose thinking that they are going to blindly agree with him...

They have allowed the Christian Right to take over this country and take away our civil liberties, our religious freedoms (and I mean free to worship something other than Christianity), or women's health rights, and have not gotten us out of a war that we don't want to be in, and have not had the courage to impeach that SOB in office now. The liberals in America are failing us? Who will be our hero?

Although I am a card-carrying liberal and proud of it, I am sometimes dismayed by the actions of the ACLU in their attempts to file suit on a few issues in particular.
