I would take the car to a reputable mechanic immediately. If your car has an computer, you may actually need to have a computer update done. I went through a similar problem with my vehicle just recently, with engine noise and stalling. It was actually a two pronged problem, there was some scoring on two of the pistons; which was causing the noise and some of the stalling. My check engine light was not coming on either, and I had the car into the dealership twice before my computer update was done and then everything fell into place. The check engine light went on immediately and other indicators which helped pinpoint the problem. Computers are great, but if they are not updated, just like we have to do with ours at home or work; they will not help in our vehicles. I had spoken to a lot of mechanics since this has been happening with my vehicle, and there are a lot of new problems arising with vehicles and wear and tear of engine parts due to the additives in the gasoline. These additives can eat away and corrode engine parts more quickly that in the past. I was very blessed that my car is still under warranty, or this could have been a several thousand dollar lesson. Hope this helps, have a good day!

No. If the engine is off and the motor vehicle isn't moving, you could circulate the kit lever between gears without the grab without doing any harm. The grab serves to disengage the moving areas to allow you to replace kit earlier re-enticing the moving areas. No moving areas = no longer something to disengage.
