Labelling is not neccessary bad. Most people get nicknames from people because certain conditions let others to label them.
Labelling is not stereotyping. Far far from it. Stereotyping means to classify a person or a group of person in a distinct category. Labelling doesn't go that far.
Nevertherless, labelling itself can be bad. It can be related to sexiusm, racism or discrimination.
But by itself, the meaning of labelling is ok. I should know. You have just read the comments of the software sorcerer. Boo...............

I think people 'label' others to make themselves feel better 'cos then they can go around thinking that they don't have a label themselves. It must be so they can feel supreior when in fact it just makes them look more of a loser than they were before.

Well you are labelling people as being people who stereotype.
Maybe you should take your own advice.

its a bandaid approach to low self esteem ... by labelling others, they get a momentary boost of false superiority ... but then reality sets in and they feel stupid

so people can try and put others in nice little piles and then commence to feel better about themselves. Sad, I know.

--a guy whos to shy to ask a girls out.....f@g.

Because people like to feel what they think is 'normal' and they think that if they point at someone as 'abnormal' then they'll feel better about it themselves.
