On Tuesday I noticed my 12 week old daughters small toe was very swollen and red. On investigation I found that there appeared to be something very fine around her toe. I removed what appeared to be a fine white thread. I looked at the inside of her socks and found that the thread had come from them and there were numerous threads that could come away easily. The thread had wrapped around her toe and was compromising the circulation and caused the toe to swell 3 times its normal size. I took her to the doctors who sent her to Yorkhill sick kids hospital. She had to undergo surgery under a general anaesthetic to revive the circulation in her toe. Apparently this has happened before and the hospitals have policies on clothing they put on babies because of this. I am thinking about taking this further and have been doing various searches to find out guidelines on clothing and any cases of this before but cannot find anything. So I am asking if anyone can help with any ideas?

Trading standards are the people to talk to. If its dangerous they need to know

Doesn't seem to be anything on the net regarding guidelines in the socks department. Probably a good idea to contact a safety council and ask them. It's not something a person really thinks about until they find that swollen toe. It can happen that a thread gets wrapped around, so something other parents should be made aware of? Loose threads, threads that come away easily, sometimes a long strand of hair, can pose a threat. The insides of socks should be checked before buying them, tight knits are better than the baby tube type socks. Or, could recommend infant clothing with the built in feet, at least until baby starts walking. Maybe even the infant gowns or tights? Just have to keep an eye on those little piddys. Good warning to get out to the parenting public at any rate.
Wait! did find something! Try a look at the site below. Austrailian, but one of many that turned up when I searched for Infant socks loose threads. Don't know there are any regulations as per thread count and presale inspection, but there are warnings.

Sorry to hear about your baby girl! I have three kids and they all had trouble getting their little toes caught in the silly thread thats inside the sock, I turn the socks inside out and cut the excess thread. Thats a bad case you have though and I hope she gets better, which i'm sure she will, kids are fighters.
Hope you get justice in what you are looking for but unfortunately I can't help you there, just passing on wellwishes!

Well on sock packaging there aren't warnings of threads may get caught ,so that would probably be trading standards or similar .
I know as an adult i've had thread catching but i'm able to get annoyed by it and remove myself.
This is first i've ever heard of a sock causing problems and its interesting to know that it could cause alot of harm .
I hope your daughter is doing ok all the best in your research.

This used to be a very common problem with babies loosing toes thankfully it doesn't happen much at all now I haven't heard of it for years so I don't think you will find anything, but if the socks were new you could try suing the manufacturers

That sucks. I advise against paying for any legal action or anything as fo yet, you'd be better off giving a good amount of research into it first.
Maybe look into past cases and the hospital policy to start.

same thing happend to my son except it was one of my hairs wrapped around his toe and he didnt need surgery.but it was still very scary.its one of the things you dont think about untill it happens to you. now i check his fingers and toes all the time and check the insides of socks. dont think theres much you can do now though except thank your lucky stars that your daughter didnt lose her toe.
