We're flying from Maine to one of these states. Then will rent a car for the road trip. We're looking to spend four - six weeks touring.

I've been on a few road trips....but I'll give you the two of the sites that helped the most.

RandMcNally.com-this one you can click on any of the road trip helpers and decide which one you want to use (there's a few), it's really more of a direct route...all about maps. Great to print out a few types of maps...quite helpful.

roadtripamerica.com-this one was probably the one that had more tips and things, but was still equal in helpfullness. PLus this one tells you where you can stop at quirky sites, and also can give you scenic routes if you're brave.

Have fun!

You will definitely want to stop to see a few of the most famous places...

Colorado is beautiful but you will run into many twisty and winding roads and depending upon the altitude you might run into snow even near the end of September (like now)...

After you get down to lower altitudes.. even just down to Salt Lake City it will clear up some...

And at even lower altitudes (like around the Grand Canyon) the weather will be nicer...

So, I would suggest that you start in Colorado and work your way downhill to Arizona.. BUT.. This means that you will be returning the car in Colorado at the end of your trip and the weather will probably be worse there...

OH! and one more thing... Going across Wyoming to Utah... when you get to the west end you may run into snow (they have had snow there already this year) and sometimes it gets so bad that they even close the interstate (80) at Evanston, WY...

Each state has a website that points out the major sites to see... and each major city has a chamber of commerce that you can contact for more info...

Good Luck! and Happy Traveling!

I drive a semi for a living so as far as road trip planning u must keep weather in mind in these areas. As far as a website to plan trip you must know first what you want to do,
