Just ran a bath, went to check it and the damn water is a muddy/yellow colour. Hot water was fine, left the cold running and it ended up discoloured.

What the hell?

If you are on the public water supply, it sounds like they recently did some work on the pipes between you and the water source. If you let the water run about 2 minutes before using it, the water should be fine (provided the pipes were fixed). You have nothing to fear with your water heater getting the sediment, since the feed off the heater is raised off the bottom, in anticipation of gunk getting into the water supply. The sediment just falls to the bottom harmlessly.

Sometimes the rust inside the pipes gets dislodged. Usually it's because the water company has been working on them somewhere. Sometimes it takes a day for it to clear up. Hot water is OK because the waters been sitting in the hot water tank so it's not discolored.

"They" say it won't hurt you, but it looks really nasty. That's what I've always heard!

If it recently rained in your area, & a fairly heavy rain...it could stir up sediment in the well. Also, if you're not on a well, then possibly some rust has somehow emptied into your cold water pipes.
I grew up with very high iron-ated water. It was a muddly brown & stained EVERYTHING. The sink; shower; dishwasher; the dishes; washing machine.

I can only guess rust too. If its got a wierd texture, that'd be strange...they say its fine. Just let your water run for a little bit and it should be ok. Faucets that arent turned on for a while get like that.
