Cookies act like a calling card. Each time you visit a web site they leave a cookie behind as a way to remember you. So that when you go back the process is speeded up.

This is very useful for web sites you frequent often and especially for those that you have accounts created like for example Yahoo Answers.

Most cookies are safe--some are not and come with spyware. Yes--you should clear them about once a month. I go through them one by one so I delete only those that I dont want and keep those for sites I go to a lot.

A piece of information to keep track of the data for a particular usage that stored in the user PC for future referencing. Yes, you should clear them if it's your confidential data. For instance, do you ever notice when you login to a website, the website can remember your email, name, birthdate, etc, only when you enter the first word? This will be dangerous if they can prompt you your credit card number. Thus, you MUST clear cookies in order to prevent others to view your information when using the same PC as you.
