september arrives and they are everywhere!
They seem sort of yucky to me, but realising that i am probably just being shallow; i was wondering if you knew of any endearing qualities of craneflies.
Do they have a purpose?

To make more craneflies. Judging by the number of them about at the moment, they're doing a good job of it too.

Sounds like a flippant answer but it is actually true, the adult stage of the cranefly lifecycle is primarily devoted to breeding. Not sure they have any benefits for human purposes really, even the larvae are a crop-munching nuisance!

I dont know, but I remember they were doing that strange bobbing dance, in huge numbers all over the outside of the public lavatories in Croyden. My girls refused to go in and wet their pants in consequence. I didn't care for them on that day. Anyway the bugs they come from (leatherjackets) ruin the lawn by eating the roots of the grass. At least I'm not afraid of them, even if they do look like flying spiders!

No Purpose

They just fly into your home the minute you open a window or door.

Some people dislike creepy crawlies and your not been shallow :)
