Sterling silver doesn't tarnish and it is a brighter metal than real silver. It technically is not (pure) silver since it has some other metal added. But it is the best choice for jewelery if you don't want to clean it all the time.

Sterling Silver refers to the standard or quality of silver. Is means that the metal alloy contains at least 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper). Silver plated means that the object is not solid silver, it is another metal with a thin covering or plating of silver.

Pure silver like gold is malleable and cannot hold a edge effectively.
Sterling silver is a trademarked alloy of silver with other metals, typically copper and zinc that creates a sturdy metal that can be sharpened well, keeps a sheen and is resistant to corrosion.

Sterling is 92.5% silver, with the remainder being another metal, usually copper. Fine silver is !00% silver and shouldn't tarnish.
Also, sterling is slightly cheaper.
