Well don't plan on seeing the falls from a good perspective because all main viewing access sites will be fenced off due to impending danger from ice and snow. As far as skiing, an hour drive would take you to Ellicotville, NY where Holiday Valley ski resort is or else there is Kissing Bridge nearby. Ice fishing is more on the Canadian side, perhaps Hudson Bay which is roughly a 3 hour drive. There are 3 casinos in the Niagara Falls area, and if you enjoy the night life, Buffalo, NY is a mere 20 drive down the 90 South from NF, NY. Allen Street and Chippewa are good areas for clubs and night life activity, and Toronto is another option, but is also an hour away.

The weather is very cold 20-30s, windy, usually snow or sleet on ground. Dress warm and bring thermals hats gloves and boots. There is no ice fishing yet as the water won't have frozen over yet, you'll have to do some shoreline fishing. There are casinos on US & Canadian side. Outlet Malls for shopping on US side. You'll want to walk down to see the falls on the Canadian side, then go back up to Lundys lane and all of the tourist shops. Skiing is available, but you'll have to drive an hour and a half US side. Look up Kissing Bridge or even further but better is Holiday Valley. Look into "Niagara on the Lake", Fort Niagara, Maid of the Mist, and if you have time check out downtown Buffalo for a day (it's only 25 minutes away). Have fun.

It'll be pretty chilly by then, especially the closer you get to the bodies of water (Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Niagara River). Look for temperatures well into the minuses (Celsius) and between 0-32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Niagara Falls will have plenty of things to do around mid-December. Most hotels, at least the respectable name brands, will have a tourism guide in your room, which are useful and handy. This should get you started.

The rest of Niagara will have many things to do as well. If you'll have your own car with you, you can cross the border, there's things to do in Western New York as well.

There is very little skiing in close proximity to Niagara Falls. The closest resorts would be in Western New York, with the closest being at least 60 minutes, if not more, away.

I live in Niagara Falls, ON.... thanks to global warming it has been quite reasonable the last few years, reaching as high in the 10 -12C range for a few weeks. When it does snow, the falls becomes one of the more scenics views in Canada. There is the Festival of Lights, two Casino's with lots of night life. One of the best shopping cities in the world right next door in Niagara-on-the-Lake. We are becoming a golf destination and when it remains snow free, some golf courses are open for a huge discount. As for fencing the falls off because of snow, it has never been done in on the Canadian side?!?

It's colder than a witches behind in Niagra Falls in Mid December. I was there once and could barely stand to get out of the vehicle to see the falls for a minute or two. You can skate if you want to , but you'll be a popsicle. I think it was like 15 below 0 when I was there.

Oh yes. You will need to keep your feet dry. And lots of extras-gloves, scarf, thermals, warm socks, hat heavy coat. And lip protector like chap-stick. Also the sun reflecting off the snow is blinding so bring sun glasses too. Better be prepared. That lake effect snow and wind is a killer. Especially the wind. Cuts right through you. Buffalo already has had their first blizzard and it's only October. On the plus side seeing the falls with the surrounding ice and snow is a phenomenal sight. Try to see it at night too. You'll be in the holiday season. The lights-WOW! Bring along a camera.
