That's why they have a feedback system. If the seller has 100% positive feedback (and more than just a couple) then you should be safe to buy things from them.

Personally made 2 purchases from ebay. One was a formal dress which was returned with no problem. The other purchase was actually dresses for my girls for the wedding they were in(same seller). Very satisfied with both experiences. The only thing that is a pain is the really lengthy process to register to buy. The 2 purchases mentioned above happened years apart & I had to register for the second purchase - what a pain!

Only had one bad experience, and the result was that the seller replaced the item with another one in better condition. Make sure that the person selling has sold items in the past and has few or no bad comments. Also, look to see who buys most of the sellers items, if one person buys 75% of the items and they have a 'canned' comment to the seller, it could be a scam.

I had a few bad experiences, as a buyer and seller. As a buyer, I had more than one issue with the seller NOT sending promptly and one time when the seller did NOT respond to my attempts to communicate regarding payment.
As a seller, there were ALOT of "Nigerian Money Scams" and it was always a waste when one of THEM would win my bid.
For those reasons, I quit using Ebay.
Amazon has a better payment system and has a more uniform shipping policy. I prefer to buy and sell with them.

I never had a bad experience either. Although once I did have one person who never did pay... that's when I shipped before payment was received (thankfully it was an inexpensive item). I don't do that anymore!
