The long legs of the insects...
Quote:Rod Crawford, Curator of Arachnids, Burke Museum
(Regarding "Daddy Longlegs")
"That confusing term is used for all these widely different creatures:
a crane fly, Tipula sp.;
a pholcid house spider, Pholcus phalangioides;
a harvestman, Metaphalangium albounilineatum
(one of many similar harvestman species)."

They're called 'daddy longlegs' because of having really long spindly legs. Also called Crane fly and Harvestmen, but the name covers different spiders that look similar. By the way there seem to be loads more around lately.

Because the male of the species has longer legs than the female - hence the name "Daddy Long Legs"
The longer the legs the more virile or attractive he will seem to the female. The longest-legged spider gets to mate with the female and be the "daddy".

If you are asking about the spider variety, it's because that particular arachnid HAS the longest legs of the species.
