Not beating then but just a spank to let them know who is in charge.

There is nothing wrong with it as long as you:

1) do it right away, when they are disobeying you,
2) do it with an open hand, nothing in your hand, and
3) don't do it out of anger,
4) explain to them right away why they got a spanking.

Try giving them three chances, then standing them in the corner. If that doesn't work, then spank them.

In Canada, it is still legal to spank your kids. This is because a three-year-old doesn't yet understand it's really important to listen when mommy or daddy says not to touch the hot stove. It's for their own protection.

Don't listen to the liberals who say it's wrong. Kids need to know and understand the rules. If you don't discipline them ("discipline' means 'to make a follower of'), later on when they get older it will be impossible. Then it will be in the hands of the police. Be nice and show them it's important to follow the rules you set down. Follow them yourself as well, so they will respect what you say. Show them you have to follow rules when you drive, go to work, even just crossing the street.

You should not teach your child that violence is a valid mean of solving conflicts. By spanking your child you demonstrate that you're stronger than him/her, you do not demonstrate that what the child did was wrong. If you try to establish the idea that violence implies that the victim deserves punishment you're teaching your child perveted ethics.

Besides, your child is fragile and must be able to trust you to protect him/her. Violoence will always degrade the child's confidence in its own sequrite, thereby destroying good instincts as a critical mind, curiosity and social openess. But violence by the parents, the ones that should above everyone else be trustworthy, is the worst.

So if you absolutely need to hit someone or something, go spank the local Hells Angels, at least they can defend themselves.

It is completely wrong to spank a child. There are ways to bring up a child without spanking. Let's try to get away from this "easy" way to control children and have a bit of respect for them.

One would then ask, having read some of these answers, what is the so called "correct way" to show a child violence. If we go with the spanking theory, then we teach violence and aggression is an accepted way of life, until they try violence on their sibling, then it is unacceptable. Then as the child grows and we have already imprinted them with "acceptable violent" mannerisms, we tell them you should be intolerant to violence, that it is not the answer and there are other alternatives. The answer is love, understanding, quality time, communication, support, respect and the list goes on. And before they say it, no they are never too young to learn these valuable lessons

It is just my opinion that when you hit a child, you are 'okaying' them to see that violence solves problems, which it doesn't. It sends mixed messages to the child about what behavior is acceptable in society as far as violence goes.
Plus, to be honest, I tink it's been studied and found that spanking does not work. You can affect your childs behavior much more by long-term punishments such as taking a toy away or grounding.
Parenting is about letting the kids make their own decisions. The reasons so many kids piss of their parents is because they have rules to abide by. Give them more choices and responsibility and you will probably have better outcomes and not find yourself needing to punish. They punish themselves with consequences with their outcomes just like adults do in many situations. People under-estimate children.

What has SPANKJING got to do with Chemistry?
You make it sound that disciplining a naughty child, sometimes with a quick smack is somehow morally reprehensible. I am not in favour of child abuse or beatings but a little clip to let them know what is and what is not socially acceptable behaviour in not the hallmark of a parental deviant.

Spanking is wrong because you are making the child be afraid of you. Also the child might start doing the same thing to their siblings and play mates.God said in the bible do not bring up child in harsh disciplines. So we must learn to do what he says because he is in charge.
