No definately not! It may be our initial reaction but in actual fact you end up being just as bad as the person who insulted or hurt you. Be a bigger person and don't worry they will get their own back - what you sow in life you reap. So dont fall into their way of doing things. Sow whatever you want to reap in life.

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life.

This states a very important principle in the administration of justice. Supposedly, at some time in the distant past our ancestors would exact revenge for acts done aginst them--revenge that often went beyond (way, way beyond) the initial act. The principle of an eye for an eye came about as a way of saying that there must be some equivalency between the crime and the punishment. This is a vast improvement over the method of vast over-reaction out of all equivalency. So, the Israeli invasion and destruction of Lebanon BECAUSE (so they said) two soldiers were kidnapped is an instance of punishment way out of proportion to the crime (and so an instance of barbarian behavior). The more modern and humane and civilized view is that the punishment should be equivalent to the crime, with judges to decide what is equivalent.

Yes, it was a reference to an old world kings rule. It only applied if you were in the same socal ranking as the other person involved. If it was a fight between a Royal person and a Surf, and the Royal person had his eye outed, then the surf might be killed. They might just take an arm or something tho.

"An eye for an eye and the whole world would be blind"
Mahatma Gandhi

I think the expression, "An eye for an eye " may be in the Old Testament, it 's a bloody and horrific as is much of its text.

Sure, if you only read the Old Testament. But, if you read the whole bible, than you would know, that you shouldn't live by those standards any longer. Forgive and forget. Let things go. May be difficult, but it's the best.
