The old man is running until he falls, the younger men catch him and force him to tell the truth about the secrets in the wasteland. The wasteland can hold a secret military base and the old man is a hermit who came across it by accident and has lived with the secret until insanity set in and the young men are secret agents from (whichever country you choose). They use various ways to extract the information (you choose if they are gentle or nasty-will depend on whether the country they are from is good or bad). You can use various sources for inspiration - eg.James Bond, military methods - just depends on where you want to take it.

The old man and the wasteland could be the subject of a painting - not a reality - was thinking about a Dali painting, The persistance of memory http://www.infj.ulst.ac.uk/~jcaug/dalitime.htm or maybe something else modern..... the old man could find himself trapped by the borders of the painting, or just trapped in a continually frozen state of running, but not getting anywhere, it could be his internal monologue as he stare out the canvas looking at the people looking at him being chased.... maybe like the screaming guy in the painting The Scream.

he could fall in to whole and die having terrible repercussions on the lives of the boys chasing him. Or he could fall into a vortex and end up in an alternate dimension. Or he could suddenly wake upp from his dream and realise that getting chased across a wasteland is a metaphor for his whole life. Lol i think the list of possibilities is endless

maybe the old man holds the secret to immortality and the young men have started to notice that they are getting older(the old man is old because he found the secret out when he was old but now he will live forever at the age when he discovered imortality)
they are chasing him to get the secret driven by the need to stay young and live forever. or along the same lines they could be wanabe vampires and the old man is a vampire who can bite them but doesnt want to for moral reasons.

As they are running it is starting to get dark and become nightfall. The young men finally find the old man hiding behind an abandoned and burnt-out car. The moon is now shining brightly and reveals the old man for what he really is - a werewolf. Now the hunters have become the hunted...

his bottom is on fire and the young men are fire men.
Why not make it part of a WW2 story, perhaps the old man is Jewish, he is on his wasteland and is scared of the young men chasing him whom he believes are going to cart him away to a concentration camp, but actually they are trying to help him escape into the country before the troops arrive in his village.

How about the old man hitting a spot of marshy land or sinking sand and the person chasing has to rescue him?

how bout he catches the old man, does what he will. then a short time later the same fate falls upon him by a man not much younger than him but thinks his ideas, philophies, and convictions are to old-fashioned.
or he can be cursed a horrible curse...and it realizes itself and the man still dosen't repent and his is punished, and it isn't untill after death he sees the folly's of is ways and is reincarnated into an animal that struggles through life but willingly works to repay his debt to society.

just as they catch up to him and are going to kill him, he goes inside the burrow of some wasteland beast that is totally badass. the young guys are too afraid to go in, because they have their whole lives ahead of them.
alternately you could just have him stand there and laugh at them, then kick something into the burrow and the beast hears it and comes out and eats everyone. that's cooler, in terms of high school english.
