Japan, hands-down. True, Germany makes nice cars, but if money were no object, any Japanese automaker could make models that would be much better than the high-end Mercedes, BMWs, and even Porsches. It just so happens that Japanese automakers specialize in the mass production models because that's where most money can be made.

What is noteworthy is that it is not so much the Japanese automakers themselves, but are actually their suppliers that excel. Small companies that make dies for making auto parts, for example, are staffed by craftsmen who can feel a fault on the part surface on the order of microns (which, by the way, even million dollar calibration equipment cannot detect). These craftsmen take pride in their work, and refuse to go home until they are personally satisfied with their work. This kinds of professionalism makes all the difference in the world.

Toyota came to America in the 1960's with crude copy's borrowed engineering. Truly innovative designs originated in Italy, England, France and Germany. Europe has been the hallmark of autos for the S130 year history. However the best car designers seem to be from Italy. Your answer is to do some more home work. Perhaps write a "master thesis" and no more day dreaming about cool cars in class!

You have to define "best" as in what and you can't make general country statements.

If you're talking reliability, you can't really just say Japan because really only Toyota and Honda are ranked high, but Mitsubishi and Suzuki are iffy at best to downright crap.

Performance, then I'd say German, but they're not reliable with small issues here and there.

Honestly, if you factor in price, median performance amongst the model range, and current reliability, funny as it seems, but I would have to say the Americans are best.

With all this said, I would still get a GS350 AWD over anything out there... :)
