It could be because they are scared. The abuser could of told them that if they leave that they get killed. If there is children then people stay for them. They don't want to break up a home and think that the abuser would never hurt the child. Then there is the we love each other and they said they would change. Most people who get abused have little to no self esteem and that gives the abuser power. The abuser also feeds on that. There are many reasons that a person can give for staying and the sad point is that they believe them.

Abusers choose their victims wisely and break them down mentally first. Make them believe it's all their fault anyway. And because they think they can fix the abuser. Also, some people get a high from the make up sex. Make up sex is very intense for some. The victim will never leave until he/she decides to. No matter how much you try. They will never leave until they are ready.

There are different forms of abuse, verbal and physical. Most of the times we stay because we feel that we can change a person...WRONG I know this from personal experience. Another reason is money, abusers try to keep control of finances as to keep that person under their control. It makes them feel important, where probably elsewhere in their life they don't.
It's not as easy as people think to just leave.

The abuser sets out to cow the woman and prove to her she is worthless and he is doing her a favor by taking care of her and punishing her sins. Why did she marry him in the first place I have never understood.

Need for punishment, feeling of unworthiness, feeling of always being wrong, some people feel guilty about anything that is wrong whether they did anything or not, desperate need for attention, any attention is better than none, severe lack of confidence in themselves that they could survive on their own, better the devil you know than the one you dont.

Also a feeling of sexiness I think borne by the feeling of needing to be touched and punishment is such an intimate thing in that it is brutish touch which can bite deep....bondage and masochistic play can be part of this.
