Never Ever get of the bridge of the ship youre comanding when nearby a tugboat or when getting in or out of any port or in any severe weather situation. Before that pay extreme close atention to the person above you in the comand chain, inkluding the pilot. Johan

There was a pamphlet put out by American Inland and Coastal Tug and Barge Operators, for recreational boaters.: 1.Commercial vessels operate 365 days a year,24 hours a day, in all weather. 2. Speed of ships and tugs is deceptive and it takes up to a mile to stop. 3. Large vessels must maintain speed to steer and they must stay in the channel, it is difficult to change course. 4. The "blind spot" extends hundreds of feet in front of deep draft ships and push barges. 5. Powerful engines cause smaller vessels to be pulled toward larger vessels. 6.Wheelwash is a strong under water current caused by large propellers. This turbulance can be hundreds of feet behind the ship. 7. A tug with no barge in front could be towing with a long submerged line. 8.For sail boats , large vessels can "steal your wind " You will have different winds after passing a large vessel. SO: post a lookout, understand light and sound signals, don't play with wakes, if you are unsure of your situation use channel 13 or 16 to check it out. avoid shipping channels or cross quickly, learn the navigation rules and follow them. .

Always use your available resources night or day. Radar or (a.r.p.a.) gps and fathometer. And never skimp on the drills. The crew may hate it but run the drills in the dead of night or in the rain.
