We just attended a surprise 60th on Friday and one of the highlights of the evening was a photo slide show set to music. It had photos from when the birthday boy was a baby, up through grade & high school, college, wedding, kids and grandkids. It was funny to see lots of the photos even though we'd only known him for about 5 years - the fashions way back when were hilarious. Many of his long-time friends were at the party and were in the pictures too, so it brought back a lot of memories for many people. For my FIL's retirement party I took two large foam core boards. With one of them I made a collage of things relating to what life was like the year he started at his company - you could do the same for your hubby's birth year. Include the price of gas, the price of a certain type car, the #1 hit song and TV show, etc. You can find most of these stats easily on the Internet, which I didn't have the luxury of using back then - I went to the library! Not only did FIL enjoy this, the guests got a real kick out of it too. With the other board I made a photo collage with lots of white space where guests signed and wrote well wishes. This is a nice keepsake he has hanging in his basement - he really treasures it. Hope those are some good ideas for you!

Depends on what he likes to do - for something different what about looking at the sites that offer different activities such as working as a zoo keeper for a day with the big cats, or a balloon ride etc.
I gave mine this year tickets to a horse race meeting and a friend of mine gave hers paintball tickets for hubby and 5 friends. There's a lot out there if you just look around a bit on the internet and you can pick the activity to suit the amount you want to pay.

Is he the outdoors type? How about a balloon ride or river rafting for the two of you.
Sports? How about lessons on driving a race car or a sports camp.
Artsy? How about painting or ceramics classes for the two of you.

Get a hotel room and lay petals everywhere with candles. Get the hotel people to cook you guys a romantic dinner on the balcony and then later slip into some sexy lingerie and voila! You both get happy.

Call all his dear ones (really close ones-parents,brother, sister or school friends) whom he has not met for quite sometime. Arrange get-together them, even if you don't like them. I think this is the best way to make him happy and he will respect your feelings also. This is the best time to earn respect and togetherness.

Hmm, thats a tough one. I think you've really got to think about things he really enjoys and band them all together into one awesome night. So, he might like quiet dinners, so cook up a really thoughtful candlelit dinner for two... that kind of thing.
