get her some small but useful presents... eg. stationery, a toy, a diary, a bottle opener etc, maybe a small bottle of vodka or something!

Is she going to be near you? It would be nice to find a salon or spa in her area and get her a gift certificate. You could probably get one over the phone if she'll be far away. I know it's not something she can keep forever, but there's nothing more useful than a good facial or pedicure when you're poor and super stressed out (and doesn't that describe just about every college student?).

Buy her a nice planner. These are very important in college to keep track of all of your activities. If she doesn't already have one, get her a digital camera so she can capture college memories. If she is living in a dorm room, you could get her something for the room. Something like a tv, radio, ipod, picture, decorations, etc. Or go to a bookstore, and find an inspirational book.

It's hard to get away from financial gifts with students. They need all the money thay can get! If you want it to be useful and for her to appreciate it, ask her for her book list and buy a few or buy the most expensive one for her. You can even write a good luck message inside it.

Teddy bears do it for me every time, but if you want something useful and a nice present, try a nice desk lamp, or mouse mat.
chocs to share with her new flat mates to help beak the ice in the halls of residence.

Most of the students at my university can't live without an iPod and a mobile phone.
Given their late arrival at lectures an alarm clock would be useful.
Since she may have to cook for herself, a book of recipes.
Maybe a jumbo pack of condoms as well to hand out to her male friends?

An extra large pack of Condoms.
That will surely come in handy as a first year at Uni.

As a recent former uni student I would suggest book tokens for Blackstones book shop. They are very expensive these days and having your own copies are a must.

How about some kind of diary / organizer - possibly with a small cash donation or a voucher for a store (where she can get something for her flat) tucked into it somewhere...

I would ask her what she need for Birmingham, college?
And but that for her.
You don't want to buy her something that some one else is getting her. Other wise she would have two.
Or buy her something that she doesn't want!
I hope this helps.
And Good Luck!
