It really is best to have no pain medication at all. Other than that, a shot of demerol can take the edge off without making you or the baby lose awareness. An epidural must be managed so that you can turn it off before you push, but the epi-lite has been getting wonderful results. British women have the option of "gas and air" to help them get through without risking the spinal column like an epidural does.

I have given birth twice and both were totally different experiences the first i had gas and air, pethidine and it ended in a ventouse. On my second i had an epidural which i seriously would never do again. I think the gas and air is the best for you. Good luck x

I used Stadol because my epidural wouldn't take. It's great and it's fairly long lasting, it won't take away all the pain but it totally makes it bearable! It also doesn't have a huge affect on the baby, I really liked that. Good luck!

There are many out there hun, its a personal choice and what works for one may not work for someone else. personally for both of my boys birth I used the old fashioned gas and air. why?? becasue getting through labour is all about breathing and when you are in labour you forget all about that trust me.what the gas and air does is forces you to breathe in a regular rythem. This really helps you get through each contraction, it really does, So for me that works, I wish you all the luck in the world, and Hun, the second your child is born and in your arms the pain you have just endured is forgotten in seconds. its the most wonderful feeling there is.

I believe they use demerol which is an opiate. I forget epidermal is the only method hwoever so no toxic shock to the baby. Demerol is an opiate so be rest assured it will work before and after. Once birth is done I am sure youc an follow up with an oxy or hydro codone.

Actually the best way to not have pain while in labor is to not get pregnant in the first place. Other than that you'll have to consult your doctor.
