Be prepared to spend at least twice as much on housing as you are paying now - the farther away from Boston the cheaper it will be, of course. My husband, when he was a poor starving grad student at Georgia Tech was able to afford a nice apartment by himself in Atlanta. When we moved up here to Massachusetts, we were in total shock!

Aside from the housing prices, I love it up here. But I'm a bit biased, as I grew up in Connecticut. The South is too conservative for me (politically and religiously) and there's too much of the "good ol' boy" mentality. Of course here I have to deal with stodgy old New Englanders, but I'm used to that. The South is too hot in the summer, but at least everything down there is air conditioned, unlike here - a few years ago there was a heat wave in April or May and many schools actually took a "heat day" because they weren't air conditioned!

CONS, CONS, CONS. Don't do it. If you're from GA, it's likely that you are a down to earth, friendly person. People in New England are not friendly. And the cost of living is utterly OUTRAGEOUS and prohibitive. Look on realtor.com to see how outrageous prices are in that area of MA and you will see that even if you get a well-paying job, you'll never be able to afford to buy a house. Insurance rates and taxes are much higher as well. Stay in GA where you'll be happier! Massachusetts is a cess pool!
