Why must email address be linked with _ and such? why can't they be eg: Big Fat Boy@hotmail.com?

it can be big fat boy@ hotmail.com if you have a hotmail account...

Because it would be a broken link. If you typed this into a word document for example, only the boy@hotmail.com will be made into a hyperlink as it wouldn’t recognize that the Big Fat was part of the email address.

If they let us do that it would be terribly confusing.
