Bones with 29 and 30 scratches have been found which are at least 40,000 years old, suggesting that the scratches were a record of days (or nights) in a moon cycle.

This was probably the first attempt by humans to divide the sequence of days into periods. They would quickly have noted that four successive 7-day periods were almost, but not quite the number of days from one new moon to the next. This probably gave rise to a calendar (such as is known to have been used by the Sumerians and Babylonians) in which the days of a lunar cycle (a "month") were divided into four 7-day periods beginning with a new moon, followed by one or two days (not part of any 7-day period) until the next new moon.

seven-day week was established as imperial calendar in the late Roman empire and furthered by the Christian church for historical reasons. The British Empire used the seven-day week and spread it worldwide. Today the seven-day week is enforced by global business and media schedules, especially television and banking.

They were named after the only moving celestial objects known at the time, and there were just seven of them. Sun, Moon, Saturn are obvious, and the others (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter,Venus) can be seen in the French names mardi, mercredi, jeudi and vendredi.

Primarily only seven planents are influencing the everyday life of us. And it was ideal to have seven days to remember. Also it takes 15 days for moon to grow from no moon to full moon. Thus 1 cycle is referred as month. Also it takes one month for moon to have full rotation by itself.

Sunday represents the sun and this day is called in the same meaning in most of the Languages. similarly, Monday (Moon), Saturday (Saturn) etc.

The timing and calender system is guided by the revolution of earth over sun. It takes 365 and 1/4th days for earth to revolve around sun and hence this is called as one year.

Based on the movement of Moon, the months are arranged. Please note the resemblance of the words Moon and Month.

One month is divided further based on the movement of moon eitther from no moon to full moon and again from full moon to no moon. This takes 15 days. This is divided by two weeks to represent seven planets.

Well, there may be a question, why Sun is treated as planet. The calender system is originally derived from India. In India, the nine planets (Nava Grahas) are considered time immemorial. These nine planets include Sun and moon. All these planents are arranged in a specific layout depicted by idols. This layout has sun in the middle. Thus sun-centric planetary system is NOT a new concept, but was there in practice in India. In all temples, these nine planets are given same layout this tradition is carried out for ages.
