So they want to revert to out dated laws because people are crashing.
Strange that, originally they wanted to stop the laws coming in because they were sure it would lead to more violent crime, yet is has lead to less.
What they should be campaigning about is proper punishment for drink drivers, none of this weak fine/ban rubbish,if they cause an accident lock them up.
That will lead to a reduction in drink drivers much quicker than any changes to licensing laws.

The new Labour licencing laws have been proved to be a failure. The emergency services do not like it. The A&E departments in hospital have had to stretch the Red time to expect drink related injuries. Landlords do enough hours without 24 opening hours. The actual take up of 24 hr openings has been low. The public can sit at a licenced cafe and sip wine outside licencing hours so the oportunity to drink is available. This was another Blair eye catcher that has failed. I have spent 45 years associated with the licenced trade and I know it needs to be looked at again. Supermarkets and off licences should also have stricter controls on their alchol sales.

As someone who worked as a barmaid for several years and is the partner of a head barman, take it from me
24 hour drinking in Britain is a BAD idea!!!!
This stupid idea that it will somehow make us like The Continent is totally naive. British people are NOT like French, Italian etc who eat dinner late and spend the rest of the night leisurely sipping their drinks.
Brits go out to get wasted. Basic fact.
Brits are binge drinkers. They will NOT pace themselves if the pub is open for longer! If they can drink for 6 hours instead of for 4 hours, they will just drink MORE!! This was the result everytime our pub got an extension. If the pub was open for an extra hour they just drank the same amount, but for longer, ergo they got drunker.
My BF's pub has managed to get a half-hour extension (11.30 last orders as opposed to 11pm) and this is whats happening. People are not pacing themselves or making their drinks last. They still rush and manage to get a couple of extra drinks in at 11.30 because they feel they have to "finish up". It would be the same if the bar closed at 12.30, 1.30. 2.30 or any time. they would just drink more, get more drunk and hence that would lead to more street fights, alcohol related accidents and the like.
The only people really profiting from this are the breweries and pubs which are making more money because thery are selling more.
Thats fine but I wish people would stop pushing this old crap about how longer drinking hours will cut down on alcohol related incidents and binge drinking because it will NOT.

I don't think they are doomed to failure. I think it was a brilliant move. Because the stupid law was there to start with the British have learnt to drink their drinks very quickly, unlike our european counterparts.
Drink driving is going to happen (unfortunately) if the pubs close at 2pm, 11pm or 3am. If anything it should lead to the arrests of more drink drivers - as before police couldn't stop and breathalise 100 cars leaving town at 11.30pm. At least at staggered times they can pull over more cars with the same amount of resources!

The police in our area campagined against the longer opening hours. It would be interesting to see statistics. It has always worried me that there wasn't a proper trial period of about a year, with proper looking into the consequences.
The comment about the Daily Mail supporting Hitler was unnecessarily offensive.

Haven't seen their campaign but would imagine its likely to very right-wing, which as a nurse I am definitely not! But in contradiction to my more liberal views, being a nurse I am now starting to see the gradual increase of alcohol related admissions to hospital, used to be able to 'predict' this for Friday - 2am, but is just a free for all in A&E's budget now! Not to mention the catasrophic effects of alcoholism has on Patients and their families!
So on this one, surprisingly I am with The Mail

Can I just say that whatever the "Daily Mail" may say, or think, it is only a newspaper.( I use that word advisedly, myself I believe it to be a poisonous rag not worth using as toilet paper, but that is just me!)
They are hedging their bets, like most of the media, so that, whatever the result, they can point a finger and say, "We told you so!" Remember this is a newspaper that supported HITLER during the 1930's.
