The electric door bell was invented by Joseph Henry. But the need to knock at the door was as old as walled houses are in existence. In India we have a heavy brass ring installed in the heavy wooden doors to knock the door from time immemorial and can be called as door bells.

The inventor of the doorbell was Joseph Henry, in 1831. "In 1830, Joseph Henry, demonstrated the potential of a William Sturgeon device for long distance communication by sending an electronic current over one mile of wire to activate an electromagnet which caused a bell to strike."
