The pope refered to comments made by historical figures and other popes in the past , such comments had negative things to say about the prophet of islam and about the islamic faith. What if the pope refered to the hundereds of hostile remarks about the jews made by so many popes several centuries ago . Would that be anti semetic behaviour , or a an action of hatered and it would require a t least a smiliar fuzz as that made in response to the comments made by mel gibson? or would it all be a matter of freedom of speech?

I think it would be considered anti-semetic and it is already making a fuss similar to the Mel Gibson incident towards Jews.

I also think the comments themselves were very irresponsible considering the fragile nature of the world today and the volatile political climate. I don't think John Paul II would have used that language and would have looked at the bigger picture of promoting peace in the world and chose his words more carefully.

It's like Japanese prime minister Koizumi visiting the war shrine and antagonizing the Chinese. There's nothing to be gained from ruffling feathers except to bring back old wounds for stupid egotistical reasons and these world figures are willing to do that and it set up a dangerous climate for everybody they represent.

What people don't realize with regard to The Pope's speech is that he was once an academic theologian and was quoting a phrase from an archaic source during a talk he gave to academics. These were not his views, he was simply using a quote in a philosophical argument. It was very unlike the circumstabces Mel Gibson found himself in.

Ya know -- the muslim extremists can say whatever they want about anyone they want but god forbid anyone say anything bad about them or their prophets. At the end of the day the majority of terrorists are muslim men between 18 and 40. Any group saying that its okay to kill just as long as it's in gods name IS inhuman.

Isn't the Pope a Catholic? Why should he chummy up to other religions? Don't you know the difference between a race and a religion?
