This is not a sexist question. I just want to know why history has always placed men as more powerful.

I think it started because cavewomen give birth and after that they are weak and need to take care of their children. Then after, the cavemen would go and fetch a mammoth to eat and women would stay home and take care of the family.

I'm not sure that the respondents who point to aggressiveness in males are on the right lines. At some stage in evolution, when protection of offspring became necessary, adaptation occurred to increase physical strength. This has a cost. The greater strength and more energy needed for this task means a greater need for sometimes-scarce resources (men eat more than women!).

This cost means that it doesn't make sense for BOTH males and females to be physically strong. As it happened, the males adapted to the task. It could have been the females but that's not the way it turned out.

This is not to say that females are not protective! In almost all species, a female will risk death to protect her young. But so will the male and he is generally better adapted to the task.

I think it may be that the male, as 'nominated' protector, assumes the 'power' of making decisions such as where to look for food, who can be tolerated nearby, and so on. This 'power' then is extended, in human societies, for other decisions, social, cultural, religious, and so on.

Kings and Dictators, Popes and Ayatollahs, Presidents and Company Chairmen, all owe their positions to a random mutation in a sea-slug half a billion years ago.

It's because men are physically stronger, when it comes to strength, however when it comes to pain women are by far the strongest, though this is overlooked.
Also I think a lot of it has to do with religions and how these beliefs were passed down, if you look for instance at both the Koran and the Bible, the male is always seen as the dominant figure, the one who makes decisions, goes to war etc. so in both strength and thought he is brought out as being superior and more powerful. Even God is referred to as been a male - though there is no proof of this in any religion!!!

Stronger physically and Mentally as strong as women. It is not a perception...fact men are stronger than women...fact women and men are equally as intelligent. Thus in a war of men vs. women men would win because eventually men would overpower women. All other thing considered equal...of course men are not stupid...we would keep a few women around for pro creation.

Not that there are not powerful women...look at history many powerful women you wouldn't want to come across. Nothing says women can't be great leaders, Leaders are not always the most physically gifted but usually are Mentally gifted and in that regards Women are more than able to lead.

What you rightly perceive is Mother Nature at work with most creatures big and small. Watch any nature documentary and it's mostly the male who rules. With luck, for us humans, if civilization continues to develop, women and men can and should become more equal. But will there be a day when we are totally equal, in all respects? Probably not.
PS: Unless science begins to tinker with our genetic makeup before birth.

The perception depends on the definition of the word POWER. If by power you mean the potential to produce more energy, then on the average, males have been biologically more powerful throughout human History. If by power you mean control or authority, then you have many instances in History
when women were more powerful than men. WV

Throughout history, men have been the aggressors. Men are physically stronger than women, as well as more stubborn. Women were slowed down by nature. Giving birth, breast feeding, etc. Because of that, over time, women became the weak sex that needed taking care of. What gets me, is that after all the fighting for rights our ancestors did. All the persecution they faced, women are objectifying themselves now. Men don't have to do it anymore.

The history of nations has been built through wars. Men are (usually) physically stronger than women (except Bodica!), thus it's men who have dictated the 'state of the nations'

Men have used their physical strength as a means to usurp power. Society was matriarchal in the past until men came along with their wars and belching and loincloths

because back in the days of creation, it was Eve who fell to the temptation of the serpent - not Adam. Therefore, women are concluded to be weaker. And later on, God assigned the work to Adam, not Eve. Ok?
