Hard drive is more correctly called "Storage." The size of your hard drive sets the amount of data your computer can store. This stays on the hard drive.
Memory is different. This stays in your computer as it is running. Generally we call it RAM for Random Access Memory. If you run short of RAM in your computer (and that goes into a set of memory sticks inside the computer and certain other components of the computer such as the video card) your hard drive can help out with VRAM, or Virtual RAM.
Memory affects speed and stability in a computer. Storage affects your ability to store files.
That's the difference.

harddrive is the place where you installed your OS, and your files. This is more of like a permanent place where you keep your informations.
Memory is actually a temporary storage space to put some info when your computer is on. These info will disappear when you switched off your computer. The bigger the memory, the more applications you can run concurrently without feeling slowness.
For a start, if you are getting new computer, get minimum 80GB harddrive and 1GB memory.

Memory or RAM is a volatile memory. Your memory is used by programs and processes on your computer to process data. The data in your memory is lost once u switch of your computer.
Harddrive is a storage location for your data, songs, videos, programs. Its a permanent storage and even if your computer gets switched off the data stays.
Memory is responsible for the running programs and higher the memory you can run more programs and your computer is gonna respond faster. Hardrive is for storing data.

hard drive o hard disk drive (hdd) and ram (random access memory) are different. your programs which are installed in HDD needs some space in RAM to run. a small RAM tends programs to run slow. If you have a small HDD, you can install few programs only.
