Hard drive is more correctly called "Storage." The size of your hard drive sets the amount of data your computer can store. This stays on the hard drive.

Memory is different. This stays in your computer as it is running. Generally we call it RAM for Random Access Memory. If you run short of RAM in your computer (and that goes into a set of memory sticks inside the computer and certain other components of the computer such as the video card) your hard drive can help out with VRAM, or Virtual RAM.

Memory affects speed and stability in a computer. Storage affects your ability to store files.

That's the difference.

harddrive is the place where you installed your OS, and your files. This is more of like a permanent place where you keep your informations.

Memory is actually a temporary storage space to put some info when your computer is on. These info will disappear when you switched off your computer. The bigger the memory, the more applications you can run concurrently without feeling slowness.

For a start, if you are getting new computer, get minimum 80GB harddrive and 1GB memory.
