My friend has a computer and when they turn it off the hard drive starts doing strange things. It starts making a dit-dit-dit-dit-dit-dit noise continuously. Like it is working real hard. But nothing shows on the monitor. The monitor is all blank like the computer isn't on. When they push on the power button it doesn't shut off. Then they unplugged it and it turned off. They turned it back on and it ran normal for a second.. so they tried to turn it off and it did the same thing again. So they just unplugged it again.

It's a dell computer. Any idea what this might mean? Anyone know what it's doing?

most probable cause is a malfunctioning hdd. buy a new hdd and re-install your os and other programs. if you don't want to spend, try borrowing a friend's hdd and try it out.

Strange,
Might be the power supply.
Try swapping the power supply with another of the same type, and see if the problem persists.

It is simpler than swapping the hard disk.

I have seen power supplies behave badly when they are overloaded. After repeated exposure, it resulted in damage to the hard disk.

I heard of someone else with the same problem but never found out what was the cause.

I guess your harddisk has failed. Its better to remove the harddisk and give it to the company and get it rectified. If not atleast ask them to recover the data and give it to you.
