My friend wants to buy me a cool leather jacket for riding with him in the winter. I told him I don't need one, yet he insists on getting me one.
I see him nothing more than a friend. He knows that, too. But he is offering to do this and I would like to accept. Will I be sending a wrong message by accepting? He is letting me think he is doing me a favor, thats all. I believe it to some point, though that is being awfully thoughtful coming from a guy like him.
But can I not take this gift without it meaning more than friendship?

If you can't accept a gift simply out of friendship then don't accept it.

It depends. If you accept you must be absolutely unequivocally positive that there is no ulterior motive. You must also guard against sending any hint of the wrong message.

If you don't accept the message will be clear. The friendship will be preserved and the two of you can continue to have fun.

If ,on the other hand you do accept make it be on one condition...he let you buy him a gift as well. You can exchange them as Birthday, Christmas, or even friendship.

If you want to ride with him in the winter; take it. It will keep you warmer and safer - unless you plan to buy your own.

He is doing you a favor. and you should accept.

The riding in the winter sends more of a signal than taking the jacket .. and yet you both know the score. Let it play out.

Explain to him that you are just friends and that's all you'll ever be. if you still want the jacket then accept it, but make sure that he understands that it doesn't get him anything in return, not even a one night stand. I hope that this helps. Good Luck.

If you have made it very obvious that there is nothing more than friendship, then I see no reason to accept the gift - because maybe thats all it is - a gift to say thank you

Accepting it sends the message that maybe, just maybe, he might have a chance to advance. No matter what you say, guys buy gifts to promote their chances.

You just have to make it very clear on what your feels are. Thank him again for the very kind offer but that isn't necessary and you wouldn't feel right about taking something that is so expensive.

No man has a woman as a friend without having ulterior feelings for her. FACT.
No man buys a woman a leather jacket without ulterior motives.

Good luck.
