I don't prefer either, tampons are very bad for vaginal health and pads are not enough for my flow, I use a menstrual cup, specifically a Mooncup – http://www.mooncup.co.uk - which is a bell-shaped silicone cup, you can leave them for 12 hours at a time, you can also put them in before your period is due and wear them overnight without risk, they are also far cheaper and more environmentally friendly than tampons.
There are a lot more than just two options, you may want to look into all your options;
Commercial tampons
Organic tampons
Soft tampons
Sponge tampons
Homemade tampons
Commercial pads
Organic pads
Cloth pads
Homemade pads
Padded panties
Period blankets
Padettes
Toilet paper
Rubber bell-shaped menstrual cups
Silicone bell-shaped menstrual cups
Soft plastic diaphragm-shaped menstrual cups
Diaphragms used as menstrual cups
Homemade menstrual cups
Free-flow
Free-flow layering
Free-flow instinctive
Extraction
Tampons are a risk no matter when you use them, TSS is not as rare as people make out, it is also far from the only risk, tampons also significantly increase risk of vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis, they prevent your vagina from keeping clean, cause vaginal splitting, and commercial tampons also contain chemicals that can get into your body causing more general health problems.
The reason they are so much worse at night is because of two reasons, the first is because tampons have to be changed every few hours and when you are sleeping you cannot do that. The vagina has discharge that helps clean out the vagina and keep the mucosa (skin-like vaginal walls) moist, as well as preventing your vagina cleaning itself because tampons absorb the discharge it means the mucosa can get dried and split, which can allow bacteria into the splits. When you are asleep menses (blood etc.) don't flow down due to gravity, thus tampons only have discharge to absorb, so more chance of vaginal splitting during the night.

DO NOT SLLEP WITH A TAMPON IN EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with a tampon you run the risk of getting tss (toxic shock syndrome) this is rare but can happen but the risk goes up if you leave it in for more than about 8 hrs and when you are asleep you cant judge time so if you oversleep it could make you ill. if you read the instruction leaflet in a box of tampons then it will explain all this alot better.
i prefer pads because they are more comfortable and easier to use but if i am swimming then i dont mind wearing tampons you just have to be careful of ow long you leave them in for. on the other hand my friend prefers tampons as you cant see them if you are wearing tight fitting trouses. and it also depends on how heavy you are on.
the best way for you to find out what you prefer is to wear pads for the next few times you are on then get a box of tampons i recoment tampaxas (i fink they do a specail range for younger teenage girls) but i cant be certain. just try them and make up your own mind.
good luck

I prefer tampon/pad combo. But I think its normal for someone who has just started there period to only use padsThen when you are more comfortable and can better predict your personal "flow" you can decide what you prefere. As far as comfort when applied correctly you can not feel a tampon. And safety Just keep your self clean, use a small absorbency tampon, And change it every few hpurs you shpuld have no problems. Good Luck

To answer your question i perfer both. tampons and pads may both leak so change them when you feel the need. WIth tampons DON'T LEAVE THEM IN OVERNIGHT OR NOT CHANGE THEM AFTER 4-6 HOURS. You could get toxic shock syndrome so always use the lowest absorbancy you need and switch to pads at night so you can sleep tight and not worry about TSS. Change them regulary. Try a brand made for teens. Cold water gets blood out of clothes and if you use tampons pantyliners are good for catching any leaks. You can go swimming with a tampon but change it as soon as you get out of water you dont want bacteria on it. For school leave a spare pair of panties and pants in your locker in case you need them. Store tampons and pads in your locker, backpack or purse. Avoid salty foods that make you feel bloated and exercise, advil, warm baths, and heating pads help with cramps.

I actually don't have a preferance. Tampons are better for sports, but when I'm feeling lazy I just wear a pad and I don't really care about it. Don't ever wear a tampon at night, you never want to wear one to bed or wear one for more than seven hours, because then you might get TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) You don't want that to happen. Try using tampons just to see if you like them, but you don't have to use them. You can just stick to pads for now since you just got your first period. Besides, no one will know if you use pads or tampons, it's not like they have X-ray vision and can see through you. No one really cares anyway.

I have to use tampons and pads because of mine being so heavy...but i prefer tampons over pads, but its just a personal preference. I know that pads are safer but im willing to take the chance of getting tss because its just me.

ok well pads r safer just the fact being that you hav a higher chance of getting a condition which can kill you if you use tampons. not only that tampons also can be harder to insert if you are a virgin. i personally use pads and half the time i forget that im wearing them. but it really does depend on what you are more comfotable with

i use tampons cuz they are comfortable and you can't feel them and it's like your not even on your period...but there is a risk for TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) but that only comes if you don't change your tampon like your suppose to or if you get a higher absorbency like a super i just use regular tampons...but i also wear pads but only at night....i don't like pads because you can feel when the blood comes out of you and to me that feels gross

Ofcourse use pads! I don't think you need tampons except if you are going to the pool or a big date or something important only! But Tampons are safe also, you just will grab it from the thread in it!

I used tampons when I was a teenager. Now I use Instead.
Tampons are safe as long as you change them regularly. You shouldn't go more than 8 hours without changing it. Tampons usually work fine overnight but you can always expect "accidents" whether it be with a pad or a tampon.
