Hey there!
In algebra, just remember that you have to deal with numbers and variables (letters). When solving equations, keep all of the numbers on one side of the equation and variables on the other side. Then solve for the given variable.
Here are some general tips on learning algebra:
1) Study the examples in your book and read the text
- Pay attention to how the problem is solved
- Read the assigned chapter, paying close attention to new terms-- math is like learning a new language. You can't become proficient in math if you don't know the vocabulary
2) When you come across a problem that you can't solve, go back into the chapter and search for a similar example problem. Use the example as a guide on how to solve the problem.
3) Practice! Practice! Practice!
- The only way to learn math is by solving many problems.
4) Maintain a positive attitude
- I know this may seem impossible at times when you get frustrated, but keep in mind that math is a logical subject; you can get through it by using common sense and your reasoning ability.
- If you think math is hard, then it will be hard
- If you think math is easy, then it will be easy. It's up to you.
Good luck!

I can't really say that I'm all that great in algebra but I think it really helps to listen in class and pay attention to what the teacher says in class. Textbooks are helpful at times but they can also confuse you so I don't really like depending on it that much for how to do the problems. If you really don't understand it, you can always ask the teacher for assistance if they are willing to help. If your scared or shy of the teacher, ask a friend or someone that is good at this subject. I find it very helpful asking a friend or friends because I'm actually comfortable talking to them and they would usually give you as much advice as they can to help you.
Also, like what the others said. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other.
Good luck!

This took me about 45 seconds to find,
"The name Algebra (from Arabic: الجبر, al-jabr) is derived from the treatise written by the Persian mathematician Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Ḵwārizmī titled Al-Kitab al-Jabr wa-l-Muqabala (meaning "The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing"), which provided symbolic operations for the systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations. It is a branch of mathematics concerning the study of structure, relation and quantity. Elementary algebra is often taught in secondary education and gives an introduction to the basic ideas of algebra: studying what happens when numbers are added or multiplied, and how to make polynomials and find their roots.
Algebra is much broader than elementary algebra and can be generalised. Rather than working directly with numbers, one can work with symbols, variables, or elements of some set. Addition and multiplication are viewed as general operations, and their precise definitions lead to structures such as groups, rings and fields.
Together with geometry and analysis, algebra is one of the three main branches of mathematics."
