son thinks that a terrible idea because he does not like that particuliar instrument, and he thinks that I am too old...Is he right? Is the violin a "dumb instrument"?...Perhaps he is embarrassed by the fact that I want to play such an instrument..

No, he's not right. Lots of people take up the violin at non-traditional times and do fine. See:

all instruments are dumb. they just lay around and do nothing. the music you make them produce isn't dumb. a form of self expression. whatever type of music you listen to, a violin can enhance the experience as can a harmonica, a cow bell, a triangle. go for your desire, but keep your heart and mind open to other tools of the trade. maybe you could be the drummer for heart.with the push of a button a synthesizer can be a violin or a concert piano. main point, is enjoy. make music.

Lol No, it's not a "dumb instrument" and no, you're not too old. Just keep in mind that kids think that everything their parents do is "dumb"!! Like Nike says Just Do It!!! :)
