there are 2 answers really to this question, Like any sailing vessel the ship will have its own fresh water tanks. From this is where the bulk of the fresh drinking water will come from , however as a backup and to supplement this supply alot of vessels over the globe are now carryin water making machines which are electrically powered. These machines take water from the sea which otherwise wud be undrinkable and removes the bacteria, salt and viruses so thusly making it drinkable. The only downside to these machin at present is that manuafacturere still cant enable these machines to withstand or handle water that has any silt in the water. Thus extra filtration equipments if often carried on bigge commercial vessels. Either way......ud never know the difference really other than a lightly "strange" aftertaste to the filtered water. On smaller vessels these machines are really a luxury mainly due to the amount of power they consume, also many units avaiable to the genrally public for use on leasure craft tend to be un reliable at best, its great having the kit but when it goes wrong its a real pain in the backside lol hope this answers ur question :)

Not quite sure about what you mean. If you are referring to a yacht, they have watertanks on board which you fill up at a marina, this water can then be used for washing and cooking, usually best not to drink it unless it has boiled ( tea, coffee etc). Your drinking water will have to be bottled water.

in an emergency, make a solor still. take salty water, put it in a large tub, put a bucket, wieghted with rocks, in the middle of the tub,the top of the bucket, should be below the top of the tub. run a narrow hose from inside bucket to hang over side of tub.put sheet of heavy clear plastic over tub and bucket, fasten with elastic cord. put a small rock on the plastic , over the bucket. put in the sun. the sun will make the water condense on the plastic, it will fall in the bucket where the rock is, then use the hose to drink from the bucket.
