It is actually better to shut it off for the night if you do not need it running. Do not put it in Standby or Sleep mode, shut it off completely. If you are only going to be leaving it for an hour or two then sure, use Standby, Sleep, Suspend, etc. is fine, otherwise it is always best to shut it down completely.

Keeping your computer on all the time will cause it to wear down faster, your processor will always be hot, and won't get any time for cool down. However, if you need to keep it running all the time, there shouldn't be a major problem. Even with normal wear and tear and keeping it on straight for 365 days a year you aren't likely to notice a problem for a number of years, and by that time you will likely have left it for a better/newer model anyhow.

Keeping your processor cool, and your computer well ventilated with an extra fan in the case also couldn't hurt.

As a side note: if your computer is connected to the Internet and you don't have good security, it is much easier or viruses/hackers to access your computer if it is always on.

Side note 2: if you are creating a webserver or other kind of server that you want on all the time, there is usually an option in the Setup program for CMOS that will tell it to turn the computer back on in the event of power failure. Usually you will be able to set it to three options "on, off, or last state". Last State means that after the power outage it will resume to what it was before the power went out (either on or off)).

The hard drives and CPU generate a bit of heat. In the data centers HD arrays run 24/7/365, the techs spend a good chunk of their time replacing worn hard drives.

Apart from conserving energy, I feel that you also prolong the life of your computer.

Yes. You do want a surge protector, though.

The PC doesn't use that much electricity. I let my computer run and turn off the monitor, which is a bit of an electricity hog.

There have been several incidents lately in the city Iive in where lap tops left turned on have over heated and started fires. I would caution you on this practice, check it out with your local fire department if you don't believe what I'm saying. If it doesn't need to be on all the time then turn it off.

I think that it's good to give computers a rest, because leaving them on all the time generates a lot of heat, and that could cause problems and what not to the hardware.

yes, but you should have it hooked up to an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) to protect it from power failures and surges in electricity. The only reason to turn it off is to save money on electricity (for me, it costs $15-20 per month to leave on all the time).

Make sure to shut down the screen. It is like having a 100 degrees light bulb. Good luck!

P.S. If you have a permanent Internet connection, I wouldn't recommend it. Lots of people looking around...

Yes, but it could run up your energy bill (if you have to pay that). I would turn it off at least once a week though, just in case you get a few memory leaks. Restarting it will fix that.
