it would fall straight back down
depending on the point of view
POV of the man throwing it -- it will go straight back down because the train and teh ball are at the same constant velocity and direction meaning their vector is the same
from the POV of someone not on the train --it will go in the direction of the train

The ball will lose forward motion only if there is air resistance (drag) to decelerate it.
Inside a train the air will be moving at the same horizontal speed as the ball and will not decelerate it; it will fall as it would if the thrower were stationary.
On an open truck there would be drag and the ball would fall behind the thrower.

This depends on who is observing the event. For the man on the train (say Jack), the ball appears to go up and fall back into his hands. For a man (say John) on the ground, the ball takes a parabolic path (because when the ball left the hands of Jack, he was in one position, but when it fell back into his hands again, he had already moved forward. Essentially the ball has taken a parabolic motion). RELATIVITY!

the ball will fall backward as the train keeps on movin forward while the bal will stop for a second in mid-ar due to its inertia and will fall slightly behind the man (brhind or fron depends on whether the man is facing in the direction that the train is moving )
