Something in their childhood brings this on. Their caregivers/parents treat them in a way that sends mixed messages in the pleasure & pain area of their upbringing. Verbal & psychological abuse play a big role along with physical abuse from family members & surroundings.

first of all, people are not born and "are" masochistic, it is a "becoming". people become masochistic when they enjoy feeling and being inflicted pain, when pain becomes and is pleasurable to them, when pain is a source of pleasure to them, and when they seek to be inflicted with pain so that they would get a sense of pleasure and gratification. they become masochistic through a realization that they enjoy or find pleasure in pain, and the psychology of the subject is the biggest factor in this. the psychology of the subject is either or both influenced by outside forces such are the people around him/her and his/her immediate environment and culture, and or his/her own reflections and experience on the matter.
