I am curious if you really know what he said as the media never really covered his specific speech, it just shows angry Muslims so it makes me wonder if the general public really knows what was said.

His comments on Muslims were taken out of context. What he said was that it was a bad thing for religion to be used as an excuse for violence. He never said Islam was particularly likely to foster religious violence. He later apologized for the wording of the comment and insisted he had great respect for the Muslim faith and its contribution to humanity.
He recently came out recently against contraception. I was raised a Catholic myself, so I'm a bit concerned about this one, I think it's irresponsible in the light of AIDS and overpopulation in some countries, but the Catholic Church is more democratic than given credit for and the word of the Pope is not to be considered the word of God, by any means. Pope Benedict XVI represents a more conservative branch of the Church and is therefore more likely to take these positions. Personally, I disagree, but that remains the prerogative of a Catholic.

The Pope criticized violent Islam or actually quoted someone else who criticized violent Islam some centuries ago. He speaks the truth which is not an element of idiocy.

The Pope should not have quoted texts that hurt and offend believers of other faiths - he, of all persons should be in a position to know what's proper, what's inappropriate.

The Pope must apologize personally. Expressing regret is not good enough.

Not an idiot, but a man with poor judgement.

What if a Muslim imam had said, "Show me just what Jesus brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman." I think Christians would be a bit upset.

Now substitute the word "Mohammed", and that's what the pope said. Granted, he was quoting someone else, but combining that with the words "jihad" and "holy war", and it shows a serious lack of judgment.

the pope never meant that mohammed spreads religion by the sword. he was trying to state that in the past religion has often lead to wars. what's so idiotic about trying to say that? it's true...
the muslims have simply misinterpreted what he said. it's too bad.

No, ALI, he is not. You, however, appear to be. Good rule of thumb for you: It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.
