I could start anything. I have the time and the patience. What should I start doing? I certainly am not doing very much right now.

No body is doing very much, the little you do is OK if it is right. You don't have to do something extra ordinary just do the right things and do it in a way that you should feel proud of yourself. be contented with what ever you have because nobody has everything in this world.
A CONTENTED LIFE IS THE BEST LIFE.

Yes there is such a thing as a better life.

I'm retired now and not doing much. When I compare that with the long hours I endured when I was working for a living; well, I think not doing much is better.

But if you are starting out in life, it's probably wise to do as much as you can to earn enough to be able to do less later.

The better life, at least in terms of work, I think comes later.

And if you work very hard now, the better life may come to you sooner rather than later.

A better life does exist. It is made of choices. Each day you do choose how you act in and react to the world (i.e. people) around you. You may not be in control of the world, but you can exercise the control you have over yourself. The best choice I make is to be happy. It is a choice. Jesus said if you have faith, you can move mountains. I think the mountains are in your heart.
That is what I think you should be doing, developing the faith to move those mountains in your heart.
You only go down this waterslide once, don't waste it! Find a passion, an interest, make a list of stuff you want to do before you die, (because you will!) and start doing them!

All is in your state of mind. Life is better when we are in good health and appreciate how fortunate it is to be a human being. Limit or draw a line when to stop after materialistic things, as that is the main cause of human suffering. Seek spirituality from faith /religion that you follow. Always understand that there is purpose of your being here, and what ever happens - happens for good. As GOD does not want any one to suffer. LOVE ALL -HATE NONE should be motto. Take care of your body, as that is the place where your 'soul' resides and 'better life' feeling is felt.
